The importance of visualization during pregnancy

We all are aware of how much the covid-19 has scarred us in the last year, and it’s not over yet. It's more than a year, and the second layer of covid is damn more dangerous than the time it started. It has affected people both physically and mentally.

So, Today! Let’s take out some time “To thank the power of the universe and being grateful to God” for showering his blessings upon us.

First, be calm and sit in a quiet environment.

Take a deep breath and make yourself calm.

Forget everything for a while and just bring all your focus to the things for which you are grateful.

Have you heard about Affirmations? Affirmations are a great way to think positively in any situation. It can help the mother turn negative feelings related to pregnancy into positive ones. You can practice it any time of the day, but with full positive intention and turning them into actual beliefs over me. Let’s try out some positive affirmations.

For Expecting mothers, it could be like:

I accept the positive changes in my body.

I am healthy

My pregnant body is beautiful.

My baby is perfectly healthy.

Thank you, God, for the fetus heartbeat.

Thank you universe for the positive vibes.

Thank you universe for all the healing powers.

I am grateful to God for the positive changes.

I am grateful to my family for their unconditional love.

I am grateful to my gynecologist for the guidance.

I am grateful to my parents for being with me always.

I am grateful for everyone around me.

I am grateful to my husband for always supporting me.

You can keep on adding to the list and making your affirmations. Just do it with the power of intention. Feel it. To get the best out of it, you can click the picture. You can use it on your phone wallpaper or the desk or in the kitchen etc. where it’s the most visible. This will help you in rewiring your brain and helps in reducing stress and anxiety.

Since now, you are carrying one more life in you. It's important for expecting mothers to feel happy both inside and outside.

If a mother is cheerful and in a calm state, it has a positive impact on the fetus.

Don't forget, the unborn can feel all your emotions inside.

So, let's do a little visualization by being in a peaceful state.

Allow yourself to take a break, at least for a minimum of 5 minutes.

Just be comfortable.

Let me ask you a question, Do you talk to your unborn child?

Just imagine and start trying to talk to the fetus.

Mother: How are you, my baby?

The Fetus: I'm rocking Mumma. Hope you're cool too.

Mother: So, how are you feeling now?

The Fetus: feeling fabulous to see you relaxed Mumma.

Mother: Do you like all the food served by me to you?

The Fetus: yes Mumma! except for the spicy food.

Mother: What makes you happy?

The Fetus: when you're singing, painting, writing, laughing, cooking and dancing, etc., and doing what keeps you happy, makes me happy too.

So, what do you understand by the above conversation between the mother and the unborn baby?

The unborn can listen to you and can feel your emotions well.

The above conversation between a mother and the unborn baby helps in strengthening the bond. Now, let us go deeper with Visualization, which means it has the power to turn the mindset into a positive and the desired situation where we want to be.

You can imagine that you are already holding your baby in your hands. You feel a sense of both excitement and nervousness. You feel overwhelmed. You are just observing those tiny fingers, tiny toes, and how beautiful the baby is.

The baby has taken all the stress away and just started giggling with you. The baby is looking into your eyes and trying to interact with you. It feels so good when the baby makes sounds like coo-coo and trying to involve us.

What can you observe from the baby’s eyes? Just focus…

Thanks, Mumma! “for bringing me healthy into this world.

I am excited to walk on the path of my life with you, papa, dada, dadi, nana, nani, and everyone.

Mumma, please don't get irritated, it makes me feel sad. Now, I have come into yours and papa's life to make your world beautiful and full of laughter. We are going to have fun every minute. Hahaha! Be ready to experience the roller-coaster ride.

Just keep sitting at the moment for some time. Observe your baby more. Talk to the baby. Convey your messages. Give your blessings.

Slowly, move your toes and fingers. Now, stroke your hands and place them on your eyes.

You can open your eyes now.

Hope you’re feeling refreshed and more energetic now.

Note: How did you feel about it? Did you talk to the baby in the womb?

Depression or Postpartum Depression (Ppd)

We all are aware of the term ‘Depression’ means a serious medical illness. It affects negatively how we respond to the situation and faces a lot of issues like loss of interest, and losing appetite, etc. It causes a feeling of sadness for a long period if untreated well.

But are we aware of “postpartum depression (PPD)”? Postpartum means the time after childbirth. This mostly occurs in a new mother just after giving childbirth. There are so many hormonal changes going on in a women’s body that take time to settle.

Having a newborn can be overwhelmed, but it is stressful too. No matter how much you’re excited for the moment to laugh and to make a bond with the baby, they demand a lot of attention. Considering the sleep deprivation, extra responsibilities, back pain, and mood swings, etc. New mothers are mostly on roller coaster rides. They forget to give some time to themselves, which develops the risk of postpartum depression if not treated well.

There are a few delivery days when a mother cannot cope up with the pressure of handling the newborn. There is a weakness in her she cannot manage. A mother might not feel as normal as she feels otherwise. She might feel irritable because of the breastfeeding issues or the pressure caused by the family or any relatives, etc.

During earlier days, a mother also faces issues like insomnia, losing appetite and, baby blues, etc. In this way, she might lose her confidence as well because of the excess weight gain just after the delivery. She needs someone to listen to her but all are guiding her during that stage which is developing postpartum depression.

What're the ways to overcome it?

  • ·        Exercise
  • ·        Make time to rest – practice meditation, do deep breathing
  • ·        Examine your breastfeeding – talk to a lactation consultant
  • ·        Confront her
  • ·        Maintain a healthy diet
  • ·        Take help from others

This mild depression mostly stays a minimum for 1 month and can be exceeded for a long time if not treated well. It becomes the duty of a mother too, not to hide anything from her husband/family members and vice versa. A husband/family member plays the best role here, where they can take care of the baby while the mother is sleeping. So, she can sleep peacefully and wake up fresh.

C-Section vs Normal Delivery

C-section delivery has become an ‘epidemic’ in India. The rate of C-section (cesarean) delivery is increasing than the normal delivery. Although the overall rate of cesarean deliveries in India is around 17%, rates have risen rapidly over the last ten years from 8.5% in 2005–06 to 17.2% in 2015–both in the private sector and in urban areas.

First, let us understand what it is.

What is C-section delivery ?

It’s a surgical process that takes around 45 minutes. The baby is out within 10-15minutes. The doctor makes an incision through your abdomen and uterus to remove your baby.

The vast majority of C-sections performed while the mother is awake, and she usually receives either an epidural or a spinal block to numb the lower half of the body. The surgery itself won’t hurt because of the painkillers—although you may feel pressure during your C-section and a tugging sensation when the baby is pulled out.

There are stitches on your lower abdomen which you need to take care of properly. The doctor suggests ointment and proper oiling for the same, that has to be maintained until a mother recovers.

What is a Normal Delivery?

Also known as Natural birth and vaginal delivery. The mother doesn’t have to go for any surgical procedure. But can take an epidural during the process. It’s a little lengthy process almost for around 12-15 hours depending on how much it has dilated the cervix.

So, now after knowing about both the deliveries- Let’s throw some light on this via sharing a few common myths.

Each delivery style has its pros and cons.

MYTH 1: Vaginal delivery is more painful than a c-section?

Truth: yes! A vaginal birth may leave mom with some pain in the

‘perineum’ — the area between the vagina and anus. But a mother with vaginal delivery recovers a little earlier than compared to the c-sections delivery mothers.

Myth 2: A mother cannot have a vaginal birth after a cesarean (VBAC).

VBAC- Vaginal Birth after C-Section

Truth: No! It’s not true. I know one of my friends who has gone for VBAC after her first c-cesarean. All you have to do is to prepare your mind and the body accordingly for the same. (it requires consistency and the regularity on deep breathing exercises)

Myth #3: You can't breastfeed after a C-section.

Truth: No. A mother should put an effort in making skin-to-skin contact with the baby and getting emotionally attached. She can breastfeed her baby with the right breastfeeding position.

Myth 4: Having a C-section means you can't get Postpartum Depression.

Truth: No. It’s an alternative lifestyle that a new mother has to accept and live this way. Postpartum depression needs to be focussed on both the physical and mental health of a new mother. It can be handled well with the support of the family members. We’ll be talking about this in our next blog.

Myth 5: C-section deliveries are more expensive than natural ones.

Truth: It depends on which hospital you choose. Vaginal delivery happens at a less rate in government hospitals whereas it’s high 10-15% in private hospitals. You can consult your doctor regarding this. But you must know what’s the difference between a c-section and normal delivery. What all can you exercise to get the best results? Rest, sometimes a complex situation occurs during the delivery time when a doctor doesn’t go for normal delivery. Thus, they decide to go with the cesarean.

You know how your body reacts. It depends on a mother’s intuition that what type of delivery would be best for her. A few can’t bear the pain of 3 hours whereas a few stayed in the pain for 24 hours to have a natural birth.

Blessings on the Way

B. Blessings

One must know these three alarming stages before the delivery:

  1. Water breaking
  2. A bloody mucus discharge
  3. Labor Pain Contraction

It was 09:00 pm on 8th Feb 2019. The pain was not much as it should be after getting a lot of high-level doses of injections. When the gynecologist finally asked us to wait for one hour more and if the pain is not there. The team would go for a c-section. The head of the baby wasn’t in the right position and was not attempting to come out. The doctor instructed us clearly that it could be risky for the baby if we waited for more than an hour. Because the water was leaking and it could be risky for the baby.

We had less time to decide. After some time, we all went for C-section. I wasn’t able to bear the minor pain when it started.

I felt overwhelmed. After a moment, the baby met her father and the grandparents. It thrilled them with a lot of emotions. I had tears of joy when first; I saw my little princess. Aww! She looked just like me. How the soul has grown properly inside the womb and has come out properly with a healthy body. They took her to the Incubator, where babies are under proper observation.

I always heard the statement, “Blessed are the ones whose first child is a daughter”. I never believed in this because I am also a first-child to my parents, but I always thought of having an elder brother who could guide me to certain things. But I was wrong. I believed in the statement when my first kid is a daughter only.

Yes! It’s rightly said by someone that it’s not about the gender of the baby. Both are equally important and have their role in a parent's life. It’s not about the boy or girl every time, but it’s about a child who should be born healthy. Ask the parents who’re blessed with two daughters in their life. As we all are aware of how our mind is when we talk about genders. Over 70% want their first child as a boy. I am not criticizing anyone who thinks that way.

Here, the primary motive to convey my message is, let us understand it via an example. In the USA, they reveal the gender of the baby after 3 months. And soon-to-be-parents feel blessed to have a baby. But, in India, this is not the case.

Not all Indian parents think the same way. There are a few parents who appreciate and welcome the first child as a girl happily. We as parents need to assure that our girls are not less than boys, even they are much better.
